This year the Vagabundos are planning a different type of trip, one that anyone can enjoy and that doesn’t require a RV or boat. The 11 day trip will be organized and led by a bi-lingual guide selected by the Club who will make all the hotel, bus and tour arrangements. The guide will make any on the spot decisions needed to keep the continuity of the trip safe and effective. The trip will start in Guatemala City, but each participant will have to make their own round-trip flight arrangement from the U.S. to Guatemala City. The Vagabundos will try to fly together if possible. On arrival in Guatemala City the participants will be met and driven to Antigua where we will stay in a first-class hotel. We will use Antigua as our base for the next three days. From Antigua we will visit the surrounding towns and scenic sites that surround beautiful Lake Atitlan. That will provide us with a unique look at the indigenous culture that this area is famous for. Many of these people still dress and practice a tradition that has not changed for centuries. Some of the best shopping in all of Latin America is available in this area. Antigua itself is a World Heritage Site and provides great museums, restaurants and a glimpse of New Spain as it existed a couple of centuries ago. We will visit the Mayan ruin Copan, a World Heritage site. It is a unique site because of the amount and quality of the inscriptions and sculptures. Others we might visit are from the Mayan Classic Period, which coincides with the Dark Ages of Europe. As we visit these sites we will take every opportunity to enjoy several great destinations, such as Rio Dulce where we will spend a night or two enjoying the fauna and beauty of the area. We will also visit Tikal, another World Heritage Site. We will use about six days to complete this part of the trip and return to Guatemala City for the return to the U.S. The trip includes all hotel stays in good hotels, all transportation and guide service. Most hotels include a free breakfast but only the final meal will be paid by the Vagabundos. A margarita party or two is a must. The fee will be $3,300 per couple. There is going to be a limit on the number of people, so if you are interested sign up early and pay a $200 deposit with the Vagabundo office at (800) 474-2252. The Wagon Master will be Tom Grady. |
